A Hawaii-szigetek fővárosában, Honoluluban született, amerikai–ausztrál kettős állampolgár. Édesanyja Janelle Ann (szül. MacNeille). Édesapja Dr. Antony David Kidman biokémikus volt ekkor, és egy kutatási projekt miatt tartózkodott a szigeten. Az apa mellrák-kutató tevékenysége miatt a család hamarosan Washingtonba költözött, ahol három évet töltöttek. Amikor Nicole négy éves lett, a család visszatért Ausztráliába, Sydney Longueville kerületébe, mert apja a helyi Műszaki Egyetemen lett előadó.
